Mattson Creative Studio

I thought that I would update the blog with some new pictures of the studio. Our office is in a 100 year-old converted lima bean processing warehouse, so we have a lot of vintage objects around the building. I took a few pictures of my favorites –  my optometrist’s projector, water level meters, a school PA microphone (which works) and some other cameras and industrial pieces. As a designer, I always gravitate towards found objects with interesting type, so all of these items feature letters or numerals. I’m also a huge Superman fan, so we have a big mural of The Man of Steel right outside my door.

Your studio looks awesome. I love the giant Superman! We moved into our new studio in December. It’s pretty much the opposite of your antique-look: http://www.version-x.com/blog/post/new_year_new_office

I strongly believe in surrounding your workspace with inspiration. Your studio looks amazing. Please convince my boss to design my workspace as artist-friendly as yours. :)

This is an AWESOME studio space! I surround myself with some of my favorites too…I love the vintage! I cant wait to move into a studio and hopefully a warehouse like yours…..The transformation of a place like this cant be duplicated in new work! Love it!

Absolutely love them all, Ty. Two things: Sometime I want to visit the office and hear you actually use the PA system, and also…You should make tape measure frames – I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who would buy one.

This studio is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Not a big fan of Superman myself but love the artworks of him in the studio and the way you’ve incorporated it into the design.

Brilliant Sky iPhone App

We recently completed a new iPhone app for our client, Brilliant Sky Toys & Books. Brilliant Sky is one of the fastest growing toy retailing concepts in the country. We’ve been working with them for the last few years and they are just an all around great client. We’ve collaborated together to revitalize their logo, redesign all of their marketing materials and rebuild their website. Our latest project was to develop a unique iPhone app that presents customers with a time-sensitive offer and encourages them to visit their local store. The app also allows users to find the nearest Brilliant Sky location and browse all the events going on at the store.

The app is currently available for free download in the iTunes App Store.

Angry Birds Rio

We recently collaborated with BLKBX Creative Group to design the key art for the new Angry Birds Rio game. The game is based on the incredibly popular original Angry Birds game, but will integrate characters from the upcoming animated film, Rio from Twentieth Century Fox. The game is currently available for download on smart phones and tablets world wide, including the iTunes app store and the Mac App store. Rio opens in theaters April 15th.

Here is a cool video of the press event where they announced the new game and unveiled the key art.

Uncle John plays Angry Birds each time her travels. How cool that he can now play the game you illustrated! Amazing artwork by the way!

[...] These are some of the rejected logos Ty Mattson created for Crazy Hare. Can’t wait to see what he creates for Cartoon Network. [...]

Crazy Hare Logo

We just finished designing a logo for a new racing/lifestyle brand called Crazy Hare. This was a fun project and I liked a lot of the concepts that we developed so I thought I would share a few of our ideas. Ultimately the client went with the first design below, because the emphasis on speed and motion…but I really like how the last two concepts play off the the name from a conceptual standpoint.

oh man these are fantastic! i can see why they went with the direction they chose if they are racing company, but all of them are GREAT!

Thanks, Steve!

From an artist’s standpoint, I appreciate that you post the various concepts amongst the final design. To me they represent all the pitstops the mind has made during that journey through the imagination. It’s too easy to get attached to a favorite, despite there always being another idea that better represents the purpose. Love the wildness of #2, the idea of #5, and absolutely adore the abstract curves of #4.

Hi Ty, I follow your work through your mom. I too have a son with DS. As far as your work… It’s great! After viewing all designs, number 3 does it for me. I have some experience in this field, and #3 is 1.identifiable immediately. The brain can process this image in a nano second (isn’t that what your client wants?) 2. with a different wheel element in the rear open space, your client could use this for a complete line, from auto to bike etc. and 3. just the eye touches on the “crazy” element. The font is ok. Great work thought. Wonderful concepts. Love all the other comments as well. Some great thinkers. I love the comment above regarding “Pitstops”

- John + 3.24.11 | 8:43 am

I love them all, but especially #3! I do have a question though. Why is the #1 hare (the chosen one) facing the opposite direction of the other concepts? Moving “backwards?”

[...] I really hate designing logos. It’s my least favorite design challenge as it is just that—a challenge! Logos need to be timeless, appropriate for their target market, and easily applicable across many mediums. So basically, it’s just hard. I do love a challenge though… here’s a logo by Ty Mattson for Crazy Hare, a new racing/lifestyle brand. I love the clean lines creating motion and the abstract visual of a hare. You can see the unused concepts on his blog. [...]

Your work continues to inspire me!

- Vincent + 3.28.11 | 2:00 pm

I really dig the final concept pictured because I get a Donnie Darko vibe from the image, which is nothing near the client’s desire, but Frank was, without a doubt, a crazy hare.

- Joe + 3.30.11 | 8:21 pm

You should not have shown them the one they picked. (As is always the case.) It’s hard to tell that it is a “hare”. If a had not seen the others
I would not have known that it was a “hare”. I thought it was a person kicking a ball.
The other 3 are much stronger. NICE JOB on numbers 3 and 4 (my fav).

Wow..These are great! It’s always interesting to see a designer’s initial ideas and concepts. Thank you for the post.
